11. pain tolerance

pain tol·er·ance
The amount of pain that a person can withstand before breaking down emotionally and/or physically

Despite his fragile appearance, Ciel has an extremely high pain tolerance both emotionally and physically. He does not enjoy pain - but he’s not afraid of it either. His mental state as a human being has been altered because of his past. This means that he is desensitized to death and other disasters, which would lessen his reaction to such painful things. Physical pain is just a feeling in his eyes. But that does not mean he doesn’t get hurt, it means he can withstand it for longer periods of time than the average person. He has grown accustom to it and feels that it’s one of his many strengths.

1o. panic

pan·ic at·tack
Noun: A sudden feeling of acute and disabling anxiety.

Ciel can suffer some intense panic attacks if he’s so closely reminded of a part of his more traumatic past. The symptoms include: Vomiting  trouble breathing, blurred vision, growing weak/tired, accelerating heartbeat, and chest pains. The worse the panic attack, the worse his overall reaction afterward will be. After an attack, he may act on instinct to remove or get away from whatever it is that caused it. He considers this a major weakness, but there’s nothing he can do about it.

Under the cut is an example of him having a panic attack and then acting on his desire to get rid of the cause. It’s an excerpt from the manga, chapter 34.

o9. handwriting

hand·writ·ing
Noun: A person’s particular style of writing.

Ciel has learned by writing countless documents and signing his signature that neat handwriting is crucial. Before he became the head of his family, he didn’t spend a lot of time practicing his handwriting - barely any time. It just never came up as a priority at Ciel’s age. His penmanship lacked a great deal for a few months after becoming an Earl. Since his schedule was filled about 90% of the time, finding room to add a penmanship class was difficult. As an alternative, he wrote meaningless letters over and over until they were crisp before writing out important paperwork. It took a lot of time, and cut into his sleeping schedule until he figured it out. This is also the same with his signature. Now is handwriting is extremely neat and professional.

o8. tea vs wine

tea
Noun: A hot drink made from infusing the dried, crushed leaves of the tea plant in boiling water.

wine
Noun: An alcoholic drink made from fermented grape juice.

Ciel would rather have tea with dinner than wine, which is why informal dinners by himself or with people he knows to a certain degree will have a cup of tea next to their meal with him. However, at a formal gathering, he will only drink wine. Not enough to make him drunk, but enough to prove that he could handle it. Being so young, other high-status or professional beings may consider him childish if he didn’t join in a toast. Impressing nobleman isn’t one of his priorities, though. It’s more about proving himself.

o7. music

pia·no
Noun: A large keyboard musical instrument with a wooden case enclosing a soundboard and metal strings, which are struck by hammers when the keys are depressed. The strings’ vibration is stopped by dampers when the keys are released, and it can be regulated for length and volume by two or three pedals

One of Ciel’s favorite musical instruments is the piano. He loves the soft but powerful tone and it’s wonderful for lullabies. However his instrument of choice is the violin because it’s relatively quicker to figure out and the sound is just as soothing to the ears. There’s a piano in one of the many Phantomhive rooms, kept clean and intact by Sebastian, though other than that it’s untouched. If Ciel thought he’d live longer, he would probably schedule lessons into his daily routines. The piano takes years to master, and sadly he does not have that kind of time.

o6. warmth

warm
Adjective: Of or at a fairly or comfortably high temperature: “a warm evening”; “I walked quickly to keep warm”.

It doesn’t take much for Ciel to become cold. In fact, it takes nearly nothing. Especially in winter, he has to bundle up a lot to avoid getting very sick or just shiver to death. His bed has a very thick blanket, because he loves being warm rather than cold. Though just because he’d rather be warm doesn’t mean he’s keen to people putting their hands on him. It wouldn’t take much to figure out, but so far his love for warmth is his own little secret.

o5. dreams

dream
Noun: A series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a person’s mind during sleep.

Ciel hates dreams. He hates them because he feels they just trick the mind into believing what isn’t there. Whether it be good dreams, or bad dreams– he’d prefer not to dream at all. He sleeps easiest when his mind is in complete darkness. Dreams to him are like false hopes. If they aren’t scaring you awake, they lure you deeper into an imaginary world. The earl does his best to forget all his dreams; especially nightmares.

o4. rain

rain
Noun: The condensed moisture of the atmosphere falling visibly in separate drops.

Ciel sleeps best when it’s raining outside. The sound of the water beating against the walls and windows on the outside of the manor keeps him calm. It’s also common knowledge that water puts out fires, but that may be a subconscious reason to why he can fall asleep easier when it’s raining.

o3. diet

di·et
Noun:The kinds of food that a person habitually eats.

The young Master’s diet consists of sweets daily unless there is an important dinner to be served. The sugar never really gives the Earl the energy he needs, so in result he is pretty much always tired. He takes cat-naps when he can, but it doesn’t quite bring him enough energy for long. Sebastian has tried to change Ciel’s diet, but he will not see to it.

o2. jewelry

jew·el·ry
Noun: Personal ornaments, such as necklaces, rings, or bracelets, that are typically made from or contain jewels and precious metal.

Ciel has a very fragile and small body-type. His hands are no exception. He almost always gets jewelry custom made, besides his family’s ring, which he wears on his biggest finger - his thumb - to keep on. However, the ring is still loose on his thumb, and Ciel finds himself fumbling with the antique quite often.
